Caffarel Gianduia, or gianduja, ballotin are the original Italian cocoa & hazelnut treats. ‘Gianduia 1865’ made Turin’s chocolate-making culture known to the world, and the golden pyramids are still one of the most popular and recognisable chocolates in Italy today. 

Serve the Gianduia ballotins with a strong coffee in true Italian style. And make sure to have two – as Caffarel’s ‘tip for gourmands’ says: ‘the first one joins the aromas just left on the palate by the second. An experience that doubles the pleasure’.

The velvety chocolate and hazelnut treats are made with Piedmont IGP hazelnuts. They have a rich, roasted hazelnut flavour that will transport you to Piedmont with each taste.

Caffarel made the first ever Gianduia in 1865. It was the time of the Risorgimento, or ‘resurgence’, which led to the eventual unification of all Italy. The import of luxury goods was limited by the government, and this included cocoa. Caffarel came up with the idea of replacing some of the cocoa in their confectionery with local Piedmont hazelnuts, known as some of the finest hazelnuts in the world. They named their new creation after the comedia dell’arte character, Gianduja, who represents the Piedmont region.
